New Home: Den/Playroom Plan

11/13/2012

Den/Playroom Room plan from myMCMlife.com

Sources

1. Sherwin Williams Greek Villa

2. Exposed concrete block wall

3. IKEA TROMSO day bed and pull out trundle $80 each (This is a big fat maybe. I was hoping our vintage gold pull out sofa would fit in here but it’s too big. We need some comfy seating that would ideally work also as a guest bed or maybe even a bed for a future child. No futons.)

4. Basketball hoop. $33 on Amazon. The top priority of this room is fun.

5. Natural hickory wood floors, like the rest of the house

6. Black chalkboard wall

7. Jason’s first guitar, which is now wall art. Second priority of this space is creativity and musical instruments will definitely be part of that.

8. Urban Outfitters zig zag rug, 5×7, in gray. Another big maybe but it’s my current top choice.

9. Pop & Lolli Build-a-Bot decal set. I won these on Design Mom’s blog and I’m pretty stoked to play with them… I mean, let some kids play with them.

10. Some kind of bookshelf to store toys, books, instruments. Vintage and metal painted a bright color would be nice. (This one is from UO.)

11. My old Apple iBook from 2002, which is still kicking, sort of, and hopefully has enough juice left to play some kid’s DVDs. Eventually we might add a small LED TV into this room.

12. Vintage footstool

13. Metal storage cart (painted a funky color) for toys and things

14. Child-size seating, like this metal folding chair, and maybe eventually a child-size table.

New Home: Guest Bathroom Plan

10/23/2012

I worked on this inspiration board guest bathroom (AKA hall bathroom, kids bathroom, etc.) and I’m glad I did because I kept remembering more details to add to the plan. Beyond the already decided upon tile, vanity, mirror, lighting and paint color, I realized I also need to plan rugs, towels, shower curtain, towel and toilet paper hanging hardware. I didn’t even get to the point of art or sink top accessories. Here’s what I have come up with so far:

Strong Foundations: Bible Verses for Each Room of the House from myMCMlife.com

[Check out the 2018 Update: Bible Verses for Blessing Your Home]

Before the drywall was installed in our new home, I decided to mark several of the studs throughout the house with certain Bible verses. Some of these verses have to do with the room and the purpose it will serve and some are more personal. I thought I’d share which verses I used in case anyone else out there is looking for ideas like I was…and also for my own reference since these are all sealed up beneath insulation and drywall now.

Entry Doors:

Deuteronomy 28:6
You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.

Kitchen:

Proverbs 30:8-9
Remove falsehood and lies far from me; Give me neither poverty nor riches— Feed me with the food allotted to me; Lest I be full and deny You, And say, “Who is the LORD?” Or lest I be poor and steal, And profane the name of my God.

Dining Room:

Colossians 2:6-7
As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.

Psalm 133:1
A song of ascents. Of David. How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!

(I forgot to take a picture of the living room wall.)

Master Bedroom:

1 Timothy 4:12
Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.

(I forgot to take a picture of the master bedroom wall.)

Colossians 3:14
But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.

Psalm 98:4

New Home Update

10/02/2012

Holy cow! So much happened at our house last week and over the weekend that I decided to move my Thursday New Home Update to Tuesday. Our fireplace insert was installed. The second to last major building inspection passed which meant the walls could be sealed up. We got insulation at  the same time as the driveway and front steps concrete was being poured. The back patio is framed but still waiting for concrete (so there was a dry entrance for the insulation guys). That concrete will probably be coming this week. The insulation was finished Friday afternoon and the drywall was delivered. We were told drywall would go in this week so we were pleasantly surprised when we drove by Saturday morning and found the drywall guys already hard at work! The worked Saturday and Sunday and go the drywall hung in the whole house. It’s been a very exciting week and the house looks so different inside now! Ready for a ton of pictures?

It’s so nice to be able to walk up the steps into the front door now:

I’ve been looking forward to “the drywall stage” for a long time! Finally, we can really get a sense of each space. Every time I walk through I’m rearranging furniture in my mind, thinking about what art can hang where… this is fun!

New Home: Kitchen Plan

09/12/2012

I sketched out the plan for our new kitchen in my moleskine journal:

Make sense?

Basically, I want walnut-stained wood cabinet doors on the base cabinets and white wall cabinets. Somewhere on the same wall as the refrigerator, I want a small open shelf for our everyday dishes and glasses. Plus, a whole lot of specifics that won’t matter to anyone but us.

These are my inspiration kitchens:

The good thing about our house taking so long is that we have time to change our minds about things as many times as we want. For example, at first we thought we wanted all white cabinets. Now we want half white, half walnut. We thought about doing soapstone countertops or concrete countertops…now we’re set on kashmire granite.

Here’s my inspiration board, our plan for the kitchen (not that we can’t still change our minds!):

1. Sherwin Williams Greek Villa – (main color throughout the house)

2. IKEA MINUT pendant 10″ globe lights $30 each

3. White upper wall cabinets

4. 3×6 glass subway tiles for backsplash

6. Double under mount sink (50/50) with lower center wall

7. Kashmire (Cashmere) Granite countertops

8. Woodland Garden 2×3 from Urban Outfitters $18

9. Walnut-stained (probably cherry wood) base cabinets

10. Hickory wood floors

11. Tabouret counter-height metal stools $40 each

12. Whirlpool White Ice appliances

13. Whirlpool 30″ stainless range hood

Ice, Ice, Baby

09/11/2012

One Friday night we went on a fun family outing to the appliance store to look for a refrigerator, dishwasher and range. We don’t need to purchase them for a while but we figured it would be helpful to decide what we want to get, especially since we had to order the range hood for the HVAC guy. We know we want to get a gas range. They scare me a bit (thanks to our first apartment and its ancient gas range that almost blew up the house…) but Jason is more of a cook and he’s set on it. If he’ll cook more, it’s all fine by me. He assures me that a new gas range will not almost blow up our house. Beyond that, we know that we prefer a side-by-side refrigerator/freezer to the popular french door model.

We just assumed we’d get stainless. That’s what we had in our last house. That’s what you put in new houses. But then… Then, we saw this.

Can you hear the choir of angels singing “Halleluh…” because I can. It might seem silly to most people, but I totally fell in love with this Whirlpool White Ice line of appliances. They’re white but not the textured white with the white handles like we had back in the 90s. They’re a smooth semi-gloss white with sexy stainless handles. (Yes, I just said sexy stainless handles.)

We had a few irritations with the stainless appliance at our last house: 1. they scratched easily, 2. drip marks were constantly appearing on the dishwasher and the freezer door below the water dispenser and 3. toddler hand prints. I can’t say for sure that these won’t scratch or show drip marks but it sure doesn’t seem like it. We asked Ali to test irritation #3 and she was happy to oblige. NO TODDLER HANDPRINTS! Yay!

I’m sold. We walked all around the store looking at other stainless appliances but I couldn’t get White Ice out of my mind. We haven’t purchased them yet, as I mentioned, but we will be. I have a Kitchen Inspiration Board post coming soon.
