Pinecone Garland

11/24/2010

I saw some pretty fall decorations on Design*Sponge last week: first these Emily Thompson Wreaths:

Then these Bird for Bread fall garlands:

And I was inspired to gather a few of the many, many pinecones that fall from our giant pine tree every fall to make my own fall garland.

I purchased some bright blue spray paint for another project (more on that later) and I had some white spray paint on hand. I could have made this a DIY post but it was really so simple.

I laid the pinecones out on newspaper and spray painted them: 6 of each color. Spray one side, wait an hour, turn them over, spray the other side. Then I used some thin wire (string would have worked) and twisted it loosely around each end of each pinecone to make a chain.

I had some command hooks (the ones intended for Christmas lights) already up on the ceiling so it was a snap to hang my garland. We’re having Thanksgiving dinner at our house this year so I thought it would be fun to do a tiny bit of fall decorating.

Our big pine tree is not only pretty but useful, too. It provides shade for the front yard. We use the pine needles for mulch. We’ve used the pine cones for decor and kindling. But, I’ve never used the pine branches for anything. Maybe this year I’ll try making a fresh pine wreath.

Anyone ever done that? Do you have any suggestions?

Turkey Pictures

Thanksgiving was so much fun this year! I had two sets of aunts & uncles and three of my cousins in town, plus Jason’s parents and my parents. We all spend the day at my parent’s house eating and playing lots of games—”hand & foot” (cards), mexican train and chicken foot (both dominoes), Nintendo Wii, Cranium).

I love how my parents pose but try not to look like they’re posing. And, someone snapped this photo of Jason and I while we were looking at a different camera.

My mama is so cute! Uncle Barrie taught Jason how to golf on the Wii.

Dad and Aunt Linda carve the turkey. (We finally convinced them to use our electric knife!)

Thank God for family and good times! I hope your Thanksgiving was blessed.

Thanksgiving Part 2

11/26/2009

This year I have been truly overwhelmed with gratitude when I think of all that Jason and I have been through and all that the Lord has done for us. I can’t get into details here but I can tell you with certainty that if it wasn’t for God’s grace and mercy and favor and blessing and influence in our lives I wouldn’t be happily married (I’d probably be gone, honestly), I wouldn’t still be at this job that I love, and Jason wouldn’t be successfully self-employed. Things could have been so so different. But, GOD IS SO GOOD! Everything that is going right and good in my life – it’s all because of Him. It makes me want to shout Hallelujah! Thank you Jesus!

I’m not generally a big Shane & Shane fan but I love this song and they do it justice and this video is pretty:

When I Think About the Lord
(Hillsong)

When I Think about the Lord,
How He saved me, how He raised me,
how He filled me, with the Holy Ghost.
How He healed me, to the uttermost.

When I Think about the Lord,
how He picked me up and turned me around,
how He placed my feet on solid ground

It makes me wanna shout,
Hallelujah,
Thank you JESUS,
LORD, you’re worthy, of all the glory, and all the honor,
and all the praise…

Thank YOU!
