Metal Deck Railings

My creative and handy husband surprised me the other day with an outdoor project. He took the vertical wooden posts/pickets off of our deck (I don’t have a before picture but you probably know what I mean) and replaced them with modern, stylish metal railings. I don’t have any DIY instructions to share since Jason did this all himself but I know he used electrical conduit (the metal pipes) and drilled holes in the wood posts the same diameter as the conduit. If you want more information than that, let me know. 🙂

I love the new look! (And I love my smart, hard-working husband!)

I love this! It’s exactly what I want to do to our old deck. Could you tell me where you got the metal pipes you used? Also, my deck has at least 2 feet of ugly lattice under the railing part, so you can’t see under the deck. Do you have a suggestion for what we could use there instead of lattice? I guess we’d have to do horizontal boards to make it look ok? I’d appreciate any ideas you have. You guys did a great job on this (as usual)! Thanks so much!

Can you tell me how he secured the metal to the wood? Love the look and want more info!

I think the holes were cut close to the size of the pipe so they just rested in there. Another piece of wood could have been added to the end of the post to hold it in place though.

thank you! One more question. How has the conduit held up to the weather?

    thank you!

Hi, This is exactly what I’ve been looking for, to replace the ugly vertical railing inside my small town house. We’re on a tight budget and are going to attempt it ourselves but unfortunately are not handy in the slightest. Any suggestions on how to manipulate your husband’s deck genius to indoor elegance would be greatly appreciated!

Do you recall what size of conduit that you all used. It looks great!

Amazing! Was this half inch EMT or rigid? My husband wants to know.

I love it! It looks great. Your husband is very creative. I also have a deck with the wood spindles that I despise. I am currently refinishing it and looking for ideas to replace the spindles. This is a wonderful idea.
