Door or No Door?

I had intended to post a bathroom renovation update today but … we didn’t quite finish the shower yet. We’re SO CLOSE! Hang on until next week to see pictures of the finished shower, ok? It will be worth the wait, I promise.

Besides I need your help with something.

See those two horizontal cabinets above? (Please excuse my messy countertop.) Well, the hinge that holds the door open is broken on the bottom cabinet. IKEA doesn’t sell the hinges separately from the entire cabinet and the only other online retailer we can find sells them for $80 a pair. Sheeah … $80 for some hinges!

However, I am tired of holding the {heavy} door open with my head while I delicately put away antique tea cups. Two days ago I had an epiphany … I’ll just take the door off! After all, open cabinets look good in other kitchens, right?

So here are some after pictures with the door off:

I need help. It looks unfinished to me. What do you think? Does it need painted or something? Take the top door off too? Should I just put the door back on? Fork out $80 for some hinges?

I think the white needs to be painted, maybe brown to match the wooden cabinet fronts or Black/gray to match the counter top. . . . or more daring – one of your muted blue or greens already in the living room. I’d probably remove the top door too it the stuff in there can be arranged neatly . . . how do you and jason reach that anyway!

An e-z fold stool that we keep in our pantry! And we have our china up there so it’s pretty neatly arranged. Thanks for the suggestions. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to convince Jason. He wants to get the new hinges.

P.S. I think one or two open cabinets looks stylish and modern, but if there are too many open like in your sample picture it looks messy and disorganized, despite how hard one tries to keep it neat.

I agree witih Jess = UNLESS there just isn’t much stuff in the open cabinets. If they rae bare and more decorative then storage they usually look nice even if there’s a lot.

I’d say that you either need to have both doors, or both open. I agree they look a bit unfinished or just like… off or something. but at the same time, i donot know if i would have noticed unless you pointed it out!!

I like your idea of painting the inside a pop of color! Maybe taking the top one off and adding the color will make it see more finished. I love an open shelf. It gives you the opportunity to not only show off some of your favorite items but also rotate collections.

What kind of Ikea hinges are you looking for? I found cabinet hinges sold seperately on their site…

    Are those not it?

    • mahlbrandt says:

No, sadly, the ones for the vertically opening doors are different. We’ve talked to people numerous times at 2 different IKEAs over the past 2+ years (since they broke) and they still don’t have anything they sell separately. You can get them through the manufacturer (for $80).

Do you use the top cabinet much? If not, you could steal a hinge from that cabinet. Otherwise, I agree, it looks unfinished, mostly due to the peg holes for the shelves. A color may make the holes less obvious. I see the Salem Biscayne up there! I got a bunch more pieces for $35 (included shipping). I think I’m going to start selling off excess on Etsy. Stay tuned.

It looks nice open! A coat of paint would give it a more finished look–I second the first idea of bringing in a color from another room. I like the idea of having cups out in the open–it’s somehow friendly and inviting.

  8. We took our cabinet doors off several years ago and love it. Makes it so much easier to cook when everything is in sight. Stuff that’s not used often does need to be wiped off or cleaned when you do use it, but for me the trade of in convenience is worth it.

My vote is on both open. (Can you rehang the doors on the vertical cabinets? I really like the glass look and think it would go great with the open shelves that will be next door.)

If you can putty in the pre-drilled holes for the shelves that would make it look good a clean.
