Isaiah Jason – 2 Months

08/11/2015

I’m way behind on blogging. Let’s pretend for a minute that it’s 6/26/15.

2months

Isaiah promises he’ll smile more next month. He didn’t smile for any of my DSLR pics. [Spoiler alert: he didn’t.] At 2 months old he’s making eye contact, smiling, mimicking facial expressions, cooing and almost laughing, especially if his cheeks or chin are tickled. He’s still eating every 3 hours during the day but is starting to sleep through the night. Last 3 nights he went 9:30/10:30 – 4:30/5:00. Then back to sleepy for another 3-4 hours. Woot woot! He’s working on tummy time. No rolling yet but he loves to sleep on his right side.

Two feet tall, 12 lbs. 3 oz.

Isaiah Jason – 1 Month

1month

Next week he’ll be 2 months old so it’s about time I get this post published. I suspected time would get away from me so I shared this IG post on his 1 month birthday:

He’s now about 8.6 lbs [oops, way off, see below] and outgrowing newborn clothes because of his length. He’s a peaceful, happy, sweet little guy. He is starting to sleep longer stretches: 2-3 hours for naps and 3-5 hour stretches at night. He’s a good eater and he likes baths. He’s smiling at us daily. He’s slightly smothered by his big sister. If it sounds like he’s the perfect baby it’s because…yeah…he pretty much is! Oh, he does have one flaw. He’s not a fan of his car seat unless the van is moving.

At his 1 month check up he was 9 lbs. 4 oz. and 22″ long. (Up from 6 lbs. 13 oz. and 21.5″ at birth.)

Some highlights from his first month:

Reusable Swim Diapers

06/26/2012

At the beginning of the summer, I was excited to find Huggies Little Swimmers on sale at Target for $8 something for a back of 20. I had a coupon too so I got 2 packages. Then I started thinking about my plans to swim with Precious almost everyday and about our beach vacation later this summer. I realized we could easily go through 20 in a week or two. When I got home, I googled reusable swim diapers out of curiosity. Amazon.com to the rescue again. (BTW, did you know I LOVE Amazon? Haha.)

As it turns out, for the same price as a package of 20 disposable swim diapers, I could have just bought one reusable swim diaper that would last us all summer. I ended up ordering two different brands for comparison and also for days when we’re in an out of the water several times. (Or in the case of a messy one that we need to switch out…)

A couple of things I learned in my research:

• Swim diapers are not meant to absorb water; they are meant to contain solid messes. This applies also to disposable ones. If they were designed to absorb water, they would just be regular disposable diapers. Apparently quite a few parents have learned this lesson the hard way, getting their kids dressed for the pool and then plunking them in their car seats… they don’t absorb liquids. Not very much anyway.

• Because their function is to contain #2, they need to fit tight around the legs and waist. Be sure to order the right size or er on the side of smaller if your kids is between sizes.

The first one I tried is this iPlay swim diaper in white. (12 month size. Precious is 20 lbs.)  I’m a big fan of this one because of the snaps along one side which make it easier to get off when it’s wet. Also, because it’s white it’s less noticeable under a swim suit.

You can see how it’s almost totally hidden under her bathing suit in these outtakes from Precious’ 11 month portraits:

She was not happy about being on her back. She was ready to roll over and get away. I tried setting up the quilt vertically. That wasn’t any better…

The second one I tried is the FINIS swim diaper in Blue Octopus. (Medium) For both I opted to get unisex friendly colors since I knew Precious would only fit them for a few months and then they can be passed along to another kiddo. The benefit of the patterned swim diaper is that it can be used as the swim suit. For Precious, I pair it with a rash guard swim shirt or put it under a swim suit if I want her to match.

Tubby Time

04/24/2012

Shortly after I wrote about feeling like everything was at a standstill, progress started happening. We’ll be breaking ground on our new house soon…soon…soon. I don’t know when exactly yet, but things are starting to roll forward. We’ve decided on a contractor and we’re doing paperwork with our bank. Also, Precious just had a burst of new milestones. Scooting around on her belly (more on that later), her third tooth emerging and this: she’s graduated from the inflatable toddler tub to the full bathtub.

Precious has always enjoyed bath time but the big tub allowed for the introduction of some exciting new toys. Also, it’s easier to wash her when she can stand up or lay back in the water to rinse her hair.

My friend Leila bought us this Yookidoo Fill ‘N’ Spout bath fountain back when we were preparing to become foster parents. Ladybug (16-17 months old) had a lot of fun with it and now Precious is old enough to love it, too. I highly recommend this toy. There are three different cups that can go under the spout—a rainshower, a mill and a nesting “peekaboo” cup. Have I ever mentioned that cups are Precious’ favorite toys ever? And the fountain is so easy to turn on and off (by pushing the big orange face) that my 9-month-old can do it herself—not exactly on purpose but she does manage to turn it on and off!

Hanging Out: Spring Swings and an Adoption Update

03/06/2012

We took Precious to the playground for the first time last week since the weather has been reaching into the upper 60s and low 70s more frequently here in Nashville. She seemed to really enjoy the swings. Not much reaction to the slide and that’s about all she’s big enough for yet. So lots of swing pictures pictures…

I haven’t given an update on our adoption situation in a while, mainly because not much is happening. Later this month we’ll be celebrating our 6-month familiversary (a term I got from the Foster Parent Podcast) and Precious will be 8 months old. We were anticipating being able to finalize her adoption around the 6-month point but now it seems we’ll be waiting two more months…until the beginning of May. At the earliest. We did everything we were supposed to do. Got our home study done in less than a month and our attorney submitted everything to the court. And then we waited. And waited. And waited. Finally, the judge’s clerk got back to our attorney to let us know they would start the process of publication* in order to terminate Precious’ biological father’s parental rights. This week. And the process takes 8 weeks. It feels like the papers were just sitting around in a stack in the courthouse for over a month. It’s frustrating to be stuck in this waiting period—just hanging out in limbo—for an indefinite amount of time.

But we could be in such a different situation that we’re in right now, and that perspective keeps us in thankful mode rather than impatient mode. We have full custody of Precious, she’s with us everyday, we’re her parents, we’re not in any real risk of losing her—we’re very blessed. Situations don’t often turn out this rosy. But that finalization is going to feel so good. Everything will be permanent and official then. We’ll get a new birth certificate for her with our names on it as her parents and a new name for her—which I plan to reveal here once it’s a done deal. She’ll take our last night, get a new middle name and keep the same first name. We’re just changing the spelling of her first name slightly because her biological mom gave her a beautiful name and we’d like her to keep it. But a little modification will allow us to incorporate in our favorite family name as well as honoring her original name and her history.

*In case you’re really interested in adoption and foster parenting technical processes, here’s an explanation of “publication” as best as I understand it here in Tennessee. When a biological parent is unidentified or his/her whereabouts is unknown, every effort needs to be made to find him/her. There is a Punitive Fatherhood Registry in Tennessee where a father can post that he is looking for a biological child. A child’s information is submitted and if it matches a father on the list, more information/testing can be done to see if they’re a match. If there is no match there, the next step is to run an ad in a public newspaper for 4 weeks. I think the ad says something like, “If you are looking for your child, born on blank, please contact blank for more information.” Pretty vague for the child’s protection. The parent has 30 days to respond to the ad. If no one comes forward and no match is found any other way, the adoption process moves forward and the biological parent’s parental rights are terminated.

So that’s where we’re at. We’re just waiting. Hanging out. Having fun. Going about our day to day lives with our precious 7.5 month old little sweetie pie. And being thankful everyday. She makes my life much richer, messier and so much more joyful…
