Happy 1st Birthday, Beautiful Girl!

Our joyful, sweet, precious daughter turns 1 year old today. I am so excited to celebrate her today! The joy she brings into my life everyday is way beyond what I had ever imagined. She makes being a mom such a delight.

Dear daughter, you are one year old today. We missed out on the first 9 weeks of your life so I’m sorry that I can’t tell you stories about the day you were born. I know that you weighed 7 lbs. 7 oz. because I saw it on a slip of paper once and it caught my eye because I was also born at 7 lbs. 7 oz. I know you were born on July 20, 2011 by C-section and I know your first mom loved you very much. Though I can’t tell you much about your first two months, so much has happened between 2 months old and 12 months old. Someday we’ll tell you all about it, and the beautiful, bumpy road that led us into becoming a family of three. Our lives will never be the same because of you, and we would never want to go back to the way it was before. People often talk about parenting being about giving, and while it’s true that we give everything we’ve got towards being your parents, you have given us back so much. You bring sunshine and laughter and smiles into our home everyday. You are constantly learning new things and encouraging us to get down on the floor and experience the world from your perspective. I have no doubt that God has tremendous plans for your life, sweet daughter, and I’m looking forward to journeying along side you for as long as you need me. Guess how much I love you. “I love you right up to the moon—and back.” Love, Mama

Babies and Dogs …

07/17/2012

I think every baby should come with a dog. It’s a great partnership. Lucy (the dog) doesn’t even like Precious (the baby) and they still have a beautiful thing going. Precious is delighted by Lucy…watching her, chasing her, occasionally catching up fast enough to get a quick feel of her soft fur. Lucy gets more exercise these days, now that Precious is on the move. But the exercise is good because she’s always eating a lot more table food than she used to (which was hardly any). Lucy is actually a very picky eater, but Precious will eat anything. Lucy is quick to clean up Cheerios, bread, cheese or yogurt off the floor. If Precious drops blueberries, green beans, peas or carrots, however, we’ll have to pick those up ourselves. Lucy sits below the high chair and stares at the rug, waiting for a Cheerio to bounce and roll…

Precious’ First Guitar Lesson

07/10/2012

Jason is very protective of his guitars. Normally he wouldn’t allow a child to touch them but he made an except for a particular chubby handed baby girl when we did the photography for his Acoustic Lullabies album cover.

Now, she’s eager to get her hands on it again. This time she’s studying how Jason plays. Precious loves music. If she hears Jason playing she’ll crawl across the room as fast as she can, climb up his legs (sometimes pulling leg hair—ouch!) and try to get to the guitar.

Her daddy sweetly lets her touch and pluck the strings, trying to figure out how they make the lovely sounds they make while he plays.

G-ma Joan’s Lane Tables

07/09/2012

Jason and I were blessed to inherit a few pieces of furniture from his mom’s mom’s home after she passed away. These two Lane end tables were in rough shape. Both had watermarks on top and one was stained with newsprint.

Jason lovingly restored them back to their original glory with steel wool, walnut stain and a lot of elbow grease.

I can’t wait to see these tables have a second life at our new house. For now they’re resting in storage.

Freight Train

07/04/2012

Happy Independence Day! I LOVELOVELOVE fireworks so this is one of my favorite holidays. I’m optimistic that we can keep Precious up late enough and that she’ll be entertained and not terrified by all the colorful explosions.

Here’s a little musical morsel to celebrate the 4th of July. My handsome husband Jason Ahlbrandt playing “Freight Train” (Tommy Emmanuel’s arrangement):

Precious Dedication

07/02/2012

On June 24 Precious was dedicated at our church. In case you’re not familiar with “baby dedication” it is kind of like infant baptism but without the water. It’s a chance for the baby’s parents to publicly commit to raising their child in the values and beliefs of our faith—Christianity—and for the church as a whole to commit to supporting the family. At our church, our pastor speaks a special, elaborate blessing over each baby. We follow the Biblical tradition of blessing—extending a hand toward the one being blessed (usually the right hand) or placing a hand on the head or chest. A blessing is similar to a prayer.

First, our pastor loves to hold each baby and show him or her off to the congregation. I warned Precious about this and asked her to be nice to pastor and not cry. She listened! A little scared but she didn’t cry.

My parents, Jason’s parents and my brother- and sister-in-law and niece were there. Our parents were up on the stage with us for the dedication.

Our dear friends were also having their son dedicated that day.

Before all of this, our pastor asked Jason and I to come up and share the story of how Precious joined our family and all the drama that happened with DCS, the court, custody and the private adoption. It’s quite an amazing, miraculous story and we were glad to share it. Jason is very comfortable on stage (he’s a professional musician so he’s in front of huge crowds all the time) so the plan was that he would do most of the talking. But somehow, halfway through the story I got the microphone. I think I actually did quite well—I didn’t feel very nervous when I was talking. My mom recorded the whole thing and I can’t bring myself to watch it—I’d rather just think I sounded confident and cohesive!

As we were wrapping up, pastor asked my parents to bring Precious up.

After church we went out for lunch with our family and then spent the afternoon in the pool. Here’s Precious with her cousin Eliza. It’s getting to be nearly impossible to get both of these girls in a picture together without one or both in a blur of motion. This one is the best I got.

I’m thrilled that we got a family photo to remember the day, thanks to my sister in law Ginger (above cutie’s mama). I meant to get a photo of all of us dressed up on Easter and we missed our chance due to afternoon naps. It may seem petty but Precious has been a part of our family for 9 months now and this is the first good picture I have of all three of us. Actually—it’s all four of us! Lucy managed to sneak into the shot and even looked at the camera. That was a happy surprise when I was looking at the photo later.

I haven’t posted an adoption update lately. We’re still waiting for our finalization hearing to be scheduled at the courthouse. For some reason, the clerk is very slow about getting back to our attorney who has been leaving voicemails daily. The chances of us getting on the July adoption docket are looking slim now; hopefully we’ll get in on the August one.

Reusable Swim Diapers

06/26/2012

At the beginning of the summer, I was excited to find Huggies Little Swimmers on sale at Target for $8 something for a back of 20. I had a coupon too so I got 2 packages. Then I started thinking about my plans to swim with Precious almost everyday and about our beach vacation later this summer. I realized we could easily go through 20 in a week or two. When I got home, I googled reusable swim diapers out of curiosity. Amazon.com to the rescue again. (BTW, did you know I LOVE Amazon? Haha.)

As it turns out, for the same price as a package of 20 disposable swim diapers, I could have just bought one reusable swim diaper that would last us all summer. I ended up ordering two different brands for comparison and also for days when we’re in an out of the water several times. (Or in the case of a messy one that we need to switch out…)

A couple of things I learned in my research:

• Swim diapers are not meant to absorb water; they are meant to contain solid messes. This applies also to disposable ones. If they were designed to absorb water, they would just be regular disposable diapers. Apparently quite a few parents have learned this lesson the hard way, getting their kids dressed for the pool and then plunking them in their car seats… they don’t absorb liquids. Not very much anyway.

• Because their function is to contain #2, they need to fit tight around the legs and waist. Be sure to order the right size or er on the side of smaller if your kids is between sizes.

The first one I tried is this iPlay swim diaper in white. (12 month size. Precious is 20 lbs.)  I’m a big fan of this one because of the snaps along one side which make it easier to get off when it’s wet. Also, because it’s white it’s less noticeable under a swim suit.

You can see how it’s almost totally hidden under her bathing suit in these outtakes from Precious’ 11 month portraits:

She was not happy about being on her back. She was ready to roll over and get away. I tried setting up the quilt vertically. That wasn’t any better…

The second one I tried is the FINIS swim diaper in Blue Octopus. (Medium) For both I opted to get unisex friendly colors since I knew Precious would only fit them for a few months and then they can be passed along to another kiddo. The benefit of the patterned swim diaper is that it can be used as the swim suit. For Precious, I pair it with a rash guard swim shirt or put it under a swim suit if I want her to match.

Precious: Monthly Portrait 11

06/21/2012

My dear daughter, at 11 months old you are quite obviously transitioning into toddlerhood. You haven’t impressed us with too many new words this month, instead you’re all about new motor skills. You’re officially a crawler now, which means we’re all getting more exercise chasing you into the next room before you discover something we haven’t childproofed yet. Lucy is also getting more exercise. Our lazy old cocker spaniel has been keeping her distance from you for the past 9 months and now she has to keep jumping up to move away, narrowly escaping your grasp. I don’t think any of us is sure what you’ll do once you do catch up with her. From your back, you flip over so quickly and start crawling that it was almost impossible to get your photo this month! You were pulling up to a stand before you learned to crawl so now it’s a very smooth process: crawl across the room to the cabinet/door/table/chair/dogfoodbag/etc. and pull yourself into standing position. That also means you’re spending a lot of time standing up in your crib. I’m not sure what you hope to accomplish by this. Usually we let you get tired (or bored) for a while then go back and lay you back down and remind you it’s time for sleeping. That’s working so far. You’re cruising a bit also, moving with more and more fluidity from the coffee table to the play table to the person who is spotting you.

Even more amusing than all the mobility are your new dance moves. It started with clapping. At first you would clap the back of your left hand with your right but within a week you mastered the palm-to-palm clap. You also love to move your head side-to-side to the music—any music. Daddy introduced you to beat boxing recently in an attempt to show off your dance moves. Not only did it work, you love it! You’re even doing your own version of a beatbox. A couple days ago you were having your own dance party in your car seat, going “tah tah tah” and swinging your head around like Ray Charles, occasionally throwing in a few claps or a “yeah!” You’re adorable and such a good time! Thank you for entertaining us everyday, making us smile and laugh.

Your hugs and kisses are arguably the greatest reward to being your mom. You’ve added a back pat to your hug, which is the sweetest thing. You were upset over some teething pain the other night and as I hugged and rocked you, you started patting my back as if to say, “You’re doing a good job, Mom. You’ll get through this.” I should note that you now have 5 teeth through. That one on the top (left of center) was a doozy—the first tooth that’s caused you obvious pain. The 6th has been stubbornly working it’s way to the surface but it’s still not through.

I’m breaking the white onesie protocol this month and photographing you in your bathing suit because we’ve been going in Grandma and Grandpa’s pool as much as possible. Despite the hard time I’m getting from Daddy and Grandma, I’m determined to teach you to float on your back this summer. After months of trying to teach you to hold your breath to no avail, I realized I could more easily teach you to blow bubbles. You’re getting it! I’m not trying to push swimming on you because I love it; it’s for your safety. But I do hope you’ll be my pool buddy for many years to come. Happy 11 Months, Ali-gator!
